FOLLOWING a court case concerning a Halifax bus driver who was accused of careless driving, Halifax Transport Department is to reduce its bus service in the evenings.

Aid. E. 0. Bower, chairman of the transport committee, told the town council that he had had a letter from the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners drawing their attention to the case. The driver had said that on the day before the accident in which he was involved he had worked a total of 14 hours 25 minutes, which constituted an infringement of Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act. The Commissioners did not propose to prosecute in this case, but advised discussion on the question of the drivers' hours.

In the circumstances, said Aid. Bower, they had no alternative but to cut their services.

A staff of 628 was needed for die existing schedules, but at no time this year had they had more than 526, and the figure now was 498. Drivers and conductors had, in some cases, been working nearly 90 hours a week and earning more than „E20.

SUBURBANITE AT DAIRY SHOW

A NEW type of vehicle, known as the Suburbanite, will be exhibited by Smith's Delivery Vehicles, Ltd., Gateshead-on-Tyne, 11. at the Dairy Show, Olympia, from October 23-26. The body of this type is based on the 18-20-cwt. SS chassis and combines features of the Commuter export model with equipment appreciated by home users.

The company will also show a 30-cwt. dairy truck and a standard 18-20-cwt. SS vehicle for concentrated rounds. The larger vehicle has rubber mudguards, rubbing rails on both sides and rubber buffers at the rear. Optional fittings include an aluminium loading deck and chequer-plate floor in the cab. Kerb-side windows are incorporated and the hinged cab doors are detachable.

DRIVING FAULTS ILLUSTRATED

MINE coloured drawings of scenes in 11 which accidents are about to happen through some driving fault fOrm the content of "Nine Lives," a small booklet produced by Shell-Mex and B.F.., Ltd., in association with the Ministry of Transport. Copies will be sent to drivers when they renew their licences.

In seven of the drawings a secondary contributory accident factor has to be detected. For example, one drawing shows a lorry (with a canvas tilt and rear doors!) turning right suddenly, and the following car is seen too close to it. The, car driver's fault is not pointed out in the caption: readers have to see whether they can spot it.
