Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DIFFICULTIES arising because a vehicle purchased from the British Transport Commission on a special A licence was said to be unfit for use on their trunk service, were stressed by Mr. R. E. Paterson, for Swain's Transport, Ltd., Sale, at the continued hearing by the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, at Bridlington, last week, of their application for the substitution of a heavier vehicle on an A licence. It was intended for use mainly on collection and delivery work at Hull for their trunk service.

The previous hearing was adjourned for the production of figures relating to the Hull end of their service to and from Manchester (The Commercial Motor, September 14).

Mr. Paterson said the vehicle on special A licence, which was purchased for the trunk service, was, because of its condition, in use only four months, and then mainly on collection and delivery work. It had now been rebuilt with a slight increase in weight, and it was proposed to operate it mainly at Hull but occasionally for journeys to Manchester.

Mr. A. King, a director of Swain's Transport, said the vehicle was still not suitable for the regular trunk service. If the application were granted, it would be replaced, and a B-licence vehicle applied for to do collection and delivery.

For the B.T.C., Mr. T. B. Atkinson submitted that Swain's had used the same figures to obtain a B licence in Manchester as they were now submitting for an A licence, and would use in the future. for a B licence in Hull. An A licence should not be granted for collection and delivery in Hull when Swain's had already agreed with the B-licence principle in Manchester.

Mr. Paterson replied that the figures were for combined operations and were in order. If this vehicle had not been avai, lable, a B licence would have been applied for.

The application was granted.
