FULL statistics concerning the output and exports of the motor industry last year are contained in "The Motor Industry of Great Britain, 1956," published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 148 Piccadilly, London, W.I. Single copies are being issued free to members on request; additional copies to members and first copies to non-members are available at £2 2s., a charge which includes postage in this country.

Compared with previous editions, the figures for commercial-vehicle exports have been clarified by a sub-division for oilers. Sixteen complete oil-engined passenger vehicles were exported to Spain last year and another 63 to Uruguay. Iraq bought 50 vehicles of this type, and the Gold Coast 44.

Portugal purchased 1,295 assembled oil-engined goods chassis, Holland 685, Finland 638, and Spain 644. Australia remained the best market for all forms of commercial-vehicle exports, taking 35,467 vehicles and chassis, with South Africa second with 13,104.

THIRD DECKS "CRUEL"

THE use of an open third deck on two-deck cattle floats for carrying sheep is undesirable and cruel, contend the Glasgow and West of Scotland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr. G. Drysdale, secretary, has reported cases of sheep jumping or falling off open third decks while vehicles were moving.
