Department might have to take new action to combat falling receipts, was given last week by the general manager, Mr. W. H. Smith.

"The number of passengers on the buses has shown a steep decline," he said. "We have not yet had sufficient experience of the new situation to make up our minds whether the pattern of travel has alteeed, or whether it is a temporary change. But we are watching the situation very closely indeed."

According to figures given by the chairman of the transport committee, Aid. H. Walton,. the last fare increase, which was estimated to produce £500,000, was now expected to bring in only £300,000. Many routes in the city are experiencing passenger-resistance. Weekly income from the buses is now about £4,000 lower than at the comparable time last year.

The decline in week-end travelling is understood to be particularly marked.

The rear-axle ratios of the new vehicles are 5.16 to 1 and Clayton Dewandre triple-vacuum servo brakes are fitted. Telescopic dampers are used at both axles, and vacuum-operated lubrication systems have been specified.
