North-Eastern Traffic Commissioner (TC) Tom Macartney (pictured below) has highlighted a fall in the total number of 0-licences in the North-East — a rate which increased threefold from lust over 1% to 3.4% in 2008/09.

It means there are now 522 fewer 0-licences held in this part of the country than there were in 2007/08.

A rise in the number of operators choosing not to continue with their 0-licence can be attributed to a "cyclical blip" but, Macartney adds: "An increase of 290% is significant, with 891 operators choosing not to continue their licence against an average of 230 in each of the previous fie years."

This regional fall is larger than the national recorded drop of 264%, which equates to 5,267 UK operators not continuing their licence, compared with 1,445 in 2007/08. The Eastern IC Richard Turf itt also reports a drop in new 0-licence applications by almost 14%, and variation applications by lust under 20%.

There has been a 3.5% fall in the number of licences in the eastern region, the largest area in terms of licence holders and vehicles specified on them.
