Strike affects deliveries to Superdrug stores

By Roger Brown A UNION CLAIMS strike action by staff at Superdrug's National Distribution Centre (NDC) is starting to hit deliveries to the firm's 300 stores across the country.

John Evans, Unite regional officer, believes the decision by 261 workers at Superelrug's facility in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, to walk out on 4 November over proposed changes to terms and conditions, means many products arc not getting transported to the company's UK stores. Unite says Superdrug is keeping its fleet running thanks to its longstanding use of agency drivers.

Evans tells CM: "However, we already believe deliveries of products to Superdrug stores around the country have been hit substantially, even a week into the strike."

Employees are angry about changes to shift pay and notice periods, planned reductions to overtime payments and sickness entitlement, and the firm's desire to opt out of the Working Time Directive.

As CM closed for press. Superdrug did not respond to the claims by the union, but it revealed in June that a review of terms and conditions of staff in its three distribution centres Pontefract, Dunstable and Avonmouth had begun.

A spokesman adds: "We continue to be keen to reach a satisfactory conclusion to our consultations."
