VOLVO'S F10 has gained some inches, Put lost some pounds and regained some ruscle.

That is neither a Scottish nor a Swedish onundrum but a summary of the F10's atest refinements. The day cab is now :aller and longer to allow room for a rest punk, and charge-cooling has taken the 3.6-litre engine's maximum net installed Power up to 281hp. But it is the latest suspension tuning which is likely to impress drivers most.

Tim Blakemore has been letting one of Volvo's 38-tanners flex its charge-cooled 10-litre muscle over CM's Scottish route. His five-page report is in next week's CM.

• THIS WEEKEND several hundred Road Haulage Association members and their families are off to sunny Spain for their first national conference to be held abroad. A few weeks ago the ETA held its biennial conference in London. To the outsider these occasions represent the tribal gatherings of the supposedly all-powerful "road haulage lobby". But how powerful are they in practice? Next week as the sunburned RHA delegates return home Janus considers what the associations have accomplished for their members as well as what remains to be achieved. He also examines the difficulties in the way of achieving even more.
