Foden gets Cats

IS no accident that Paccar 's Foden Trucks division has Isen its lightweight S108 ht-wheeler with which to nch Caterpillar's power units automotive use in the UK, tes BILL BROCK.

:aterpillar is well known in the istruction field where its nt, equipment and engines ,e been in use for many years.

may, however, be only ncidental that Paccar UK naging director Hank Kiefer 3 also instrumental in intro:ing Caterpillar engines to 3tralian road hauliers, with om they now account for )ut 25 per cent of power units. KI to Kenworth vehicles.

he 3306B turbocharged and rcooled six-cylinder in-line me destined for the UK — a nmercial vehicle version of a t fitted to 22 types of Caterpil s earth moving machines — :ame established over the t ten years in North America association with Kenworth I Peterbi It.

lver 300,000 of this type of t are claimed to be in operathroughout the world in a iety of on and off-road applions. The product line cornes three families of truck en e ranging from 120 to 336kW 3 to 450bhp).

he 3306B 10.5 litre (638cuin) t is available with power out s of 183 and 201kW (245 and 'bhp) obtained through difmces in fuelling and the de e of turbocharging. Peak tor of 114Nm (845 lbft) at DOrpm is the same for both sions, but the torque rise of aer cent in the most powerful t is twice as steep for the lower rated unit.

Engine reliability, long life and serviceability were major considerations in the 3306B's design, which dates back to the early 70s in its present form but is based on 40 years of evolution.

The cylinder head, cast in one piece out of molybdenum-nickel, is resistant to warping, while integral intake manifolds eliminate gaskets. A spacer plate is used between the head and block adding strength to the total assembly by avoiding counter boring of the block, itself cast in a single piece from a special alloy and ribbed for rigidity.

The 3360B's crankshaft is deephardened against wear and seven main bearings dissipate the loadings. Slightly elliptical and tapered aluminium pistons incorporate a three ring design (two compression and an oil scraper) while the wet liners are induction-hardened for durability. Stellite-faced exhaust valves with hardened-steel stems provide resistance to heat and wear. Engine accessories such as the water pump, air compressor and power steering are all gear driven.

Caterpillar's direct injection fuel system incorporates a hydra-mechanical full range governor obviating the need for addon power take-off speed controls.

Individual pumps of the Scrolltype fuel system provide a balanced supply to each cylinder, and once set at the factory need no further routine adjustment. Slim injectors take up a minimum of space while their nine-hole tips promote clean and complete combustion. They can be replaced in the field without calibration.

The engines, all up-weight of 926Kg (2,040 lb), provide a creditable power to weight ratio acceptable for varied operation between 24 and 38 tonnes but in the 8x4 chassis is matched to either Fuller or Spicer ninespeed boxes driving through to Rockwell axles.

Initially, engines will come from the US and later from the company's Gosselies plant in Belgium.

In the UK there are four independent dealers — Leverton and Company, Bowmaker Plant, Caledonian Tractor and Equipment, and McCormick MacNaughton (to handle Caterpillar's product range).
