A PLAN to impose a permit system on hauliers bringing lorries into Central London moved one step nearer reality this week.

The Greater London Council's Transport Committee agreed to the scheme in principle. It has been proposed to replace a plan (CM April 23) to stop lorries above a certain length entering London except between 7 pm and 7 am. That plan is now being dropped.

Labour councillor and haulier Mr T. A. 3enkinson told the committee that the City of London has had a ban on lorries over 25 feet long since he was a small boy. "The best way out of this is to make the lorries keep to the bus routes — no route, no lorries," he said.

The committee has agreed to put the scheme to the next meeting of the full council on November 23. They also will be giving consideration to a plan for local zonal schemes for banning lorries from residential areas.

Labour councillor Mr David White saw the only answer to the question of lorries in London as nationalisation of the road haulage industry. "The whole thing would be solved with a plan for nationalisation," he said.
