Following a merger of Slaven Transport Products with the Dayton Steel Foundry of America, Dayton cast-steel fifth-wheels are now available in the UK from the English company.
Dayton has been manufacturing this type of fifth-wheel for more than 30 years. Models in current production have no trunnion bearings; they pivot on rubber blocks. Adjustment for jaw and king-pin wear is automatically provided by an optional device incorporating a rubber pack.
A sliding type of fifth-wheel, known as the Dayton 250, has a "claw foot" that is claimed to eliminate slack for the life of the unit and to prevent lateral or vertical play. Optional equipment includes a pneumatically operated locking mechanism. A conventional pin-and-rail sliding type has a range of 36in. or 64in. in increments of 4in.
