FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT

AN increase of nearly 2,500 in the number of British Road Services vehicles over the past year—but a drop in the number owned by British Railways—was reported last week by the Minister of Transport.

In reply to a series of questions from Mr, David Webster (Tory. Weston-superMare), Mr. Fraser said that at the end of September, 1964 the road haulage undertakings controlled by the Transport Holding Company owned about 15,700 powered vehicles frigid and articulated) and 7,800 additional trailers. At the end of September this year the figures were about 18,100 powered vehicles and about 8.600 additional trailers.

In October last year, went on Mr. Fraser, the Railways Board had 13,062 powered units and 19,753 additional trailers in operation, whereas this October the figures had been 11.636 powered units and 20,311 additional trailers..

Mr. Webster also wanted to know the total number of vehicles taken over by BRS by acquisition of other companies since last October, and the cost to the organization.

It would not be in the commercial interest of the Transport Holding Company to dispose the number of-vehicles acquired. replied Mr. Fraser,

On the question of the price paid for the businesses concerned, the' position was not materially different from what he had said in August, added the Minister. Then he gave a figure of around £7m. which included £5m. to acquire a 75 per cent interest iii-Tayforth Ltd.

As for the number of vehicles acquired by British Railways taking over companies during the past year—there were no such vehicles, said Mr. Fraser.
