THISyear these four distributors of Rootes products in Scotland have a joint Stand on which representative models from the whole range of Commer commercial vehicles are displayed. There are altogether nine vehicles on the joint stand; these range from two examples of the Imp van. which was introduced on November 5 to the 22/24-ton tractive

unit which was announced'on October 29.

All the models on show, with the exception of a Walk-Thru 2-ton van with Garner body and a Maxiload 16-tongross machine with Campion drop-side body, are actually being shown for the first time. There are two examples of the Commer 1500 model which was recently subjected to a number of changes including the use of the Rootes 1,725 c.c. 62 b.h.p. petrol engine or Perkins 4.108 52 b.h.p. diesel and the introduction of the Borg Warner auto: matic transmission option. One of the Show exhibits is a van having the automatic and diesel engine options, whilst the other has the new petrol engine, a synchromesh gearbox and a 12-seater light bus body.

At the same time that Rootes introduced their new tractive unit for a gross train weight of 22 or 24 tons, changes were made to the 7and 8-ton models. The main one was that the Perkins 6.354 diesel was introduced as an option on the 8-tonner--the first time for Rootes on a rigid of this weight—and that the higher-capacity Rootes three-cylinder, two-stroke, opposed-piston diesel introduced last year--the 3D.215—was made the standard fitting.

Following the introduction of the 3D.215, Routes produced three versions of the three-cylinder diesel—the 3D.I99, producing 102 b.h.p. net; an uprated version of this, the 3DA.199, giving 114 b.h.p. net: and the 3D.215, with an output of 132 b.h,p. Now the smallercapacity engines are dropped and to retain an engine with the same output as the 3DA.199, the 3D.215 is made in a derated version, the 3DB.215.

An 8-ton tipper to the latest specification which is shown has the Perkins 6.354, whilst an 8-tonner with a Garner dropside body has a Rootes 135 b.h.p. diesel.

The most important vehicle on the joint stand is undoubtedly the new Commer 22/24-ton-g.t.w. tractive unit, This was fully described in The Commercial Motor last week and the Show exhibit has a specification which includes, as well as the Rootes 135 b.h.p. diesel, a fivespeed gearbox, two-speed axle and fullair brakes. A similar vehicle will be on the demonstration park, where there will also be a number of other Commer vehicles including a 19-ton-g.t.w. tractive unit, 8-tonners with Perkins and Rootes engines. a Walk-Thru van, a 1500 van and two Imp vans.
