Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Scottish Motor Exhibition which opens today in Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, should be the most interesting for many years. There are not a great number of absolutely new models but on many of the 51 stands displaying commercial vehicles are exhibits which have not been shown in Scotland before. 'rinse include all the new rnodeLs at the 1964 Earls Court Show and those introduced in the past year.

Several of the new models have been announced in the past few weeks and included in this category is the Seddon 16 : four, featured on stand 98 in its 28-ton-gross tractive unit version. An important feature of this model—the rigids are designed for 16 tons gross—is that the new Perkins V8 engine is fitted. There are two other chassis at the Scottish Show using the Perkins V8 but these are prototypes, One is a Maxim 6 x 4 on the Dennis stand (105) whilst on the demonstration park ERF has a tractive unit with this engine.

Dennis is also showing another recently introduced model, the Paravan Mk. H, whilst on the stands displaying Bedford vehicles (112, 116, 123 and 124) the new lightweight TK models with front disc brakes and the new site tipper can be inspected.

Dodge has now joined Commer as a member of the Rootes Group and both these companies have important exhibits. Commer has the new 24-ton-gross tractive unit on stands occupied by its Scottish distributors (107, 108, 103 and 104) and on stands 102 and 115 examples from the Dodge 500 Series can be seen together with chassis from the Commer range which have been added to those marketed by Dodge.

The two vehicles on the Albion stand (95) are recent introductions, the rear-engined Viking on July 2 and the Super Reiver 19 last week, and on stand 101 there is the new AEC Mammoth Major twin-steer tractive unit. The Scammell Trunker on stand 104 is another twin-steer tractive unit for 32 tons gross but here the second steering axle is set close to the driving axle. With the Trunker on the Scammell stand is an example from the new Scammell semi-trailer range.

Only one of the goods vehicles appearing on the stands containing Fords (86, 87. 92, 93, 94 and 109) has been exhibited at a UK vehicle show before, the rest are from the D Series and new Transit van ranges. The Guy Invincible NIL III with Cummins NK 180 engine shown on stand 106 is also on exhibition for the first time.

Of the four non-British manufacturers represented at Kelvin Hall only Renault on stand 85 has a new model, this being a 1-ton version of the Estafefte high-roof van. Stand 101—A EC Ltd., Southall, Middx.

THE main attraction on the AEC stand is the Mammoth Minor six-wheeled, twin-steer tractive unit for 32 tons gross train weight which, although originally announced in March, has only just gone into production. The only other vehicle on the stand is a Reliance 590 coach with Walter Alexander bodywork, but on the demonstration park there is a Swift rearengined p.s.v. chassis with a Willowbrook service-bus body.

The AV 760 six-cylinder diesel engine is fitted in the Mammoth Minor, this being the optional fitting instead of an AV 691 which is standard. Power output of the AV 760 is 226 b.h.p, net at 2,200 r.p.m. and the drive is taken through an AEC six-speed overdrive gearbox. This model is the latest in the range of AEC goods vehicles fitted with the Leyland Group Ergomatic tilt cab, which offers a high degree of driver comfort.

Power for the Reliance 590 is provided by an AU 590 horizontal engine located within the wheelbase. This produces 153 b.h.p. net at 2.000 r.p.m. and drives through a four-speed synchromesh gearbox. The chassis is fitted with the standard Walter Alexander " Y "-type bodywork, which features a newly styled interior, and there is seating for 49 passengers. The finish is in the cream and green livery of Scottish Omnibuses Ltd. and the coach will be used on rural services.

The AEC Swift on the demonstration park was introduced at last year's Earls Court Show and is powered by the

505 dry -liner diesel engine located horizontally at the extreme rear of the chassis. Power output is 154 b.h.p. net at 2,400 nom. and the gearbox is a Monocontrol semi-automatic unit. Seating accommodation for up to 53 passengers is Provided in the Willowbrook service-bus bodywork.

ratio, nine-speed " splitter " box. Sectioned examples of the six-speed overdrive and the nine-speed splitter boxes can be seen on the stand.

The rear-engined Viking exhibit has a 40-seat bus/coach body by Walter Alexander and, like the Super Reiver 19, this model uses a Leyland 0.400 125 Is.h.p. diesel. The engine is mounted vertically at the rear, driving forward through a. six-speed overdrive gearbox to the rear axle. The Viking also has a two-circuit brake system, but it is an airassisted hydraulic layout with two diaphragm-type brake chambers having integral..hydratilic master cylinders opergting the front and rear brakes independently.

On the other to stands featuring Albion vehicles, examplesof the Super Clydesdale 16-ton four-wheeler can oe seen. Millburn Motors is showing one with a tank and equipment for bulk-milk collection built by Thermotank Ltd. The vehicle is to be operated by -Agnew and Lithgow Ltd., of Stranraer. On the stand of Joseph Wilkinson there will be a tipper version of the Super Clydesdale for J. and J. Lawrence. of Edinburgh. with end-tipping all-steel body and Edbro tipping gear.
