• P & 0 Roadtanks has been vindicated in sacking a driver for falsely claiming overnight subsistence after an industrial tribunal last week dismissed a claim by the driver for unfair dismissal.

Mel Stembridge, an employee at the company's Hull depot, was sacked in October when he admitted to wrongly claiming an overnight subsistence allowance and booking off at a false location. However, he denies he made false traces on the tacho chart with a pen.

Stembridge, backed by the United Road Transport Union, had unsuccessfully argued that in the sacking P&O Roadtanks had shown it was inconsistent in the way it dealt with some of its disciplinary problems. After the tribunal P&O Roadtanks managing director Steve Bradburn called the tribunal's decision the "correct outcome".
