Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Five LDoY rounds all on one day, last Sunday, and another four next weekend — the 1972 competition is hotting up. From all around come reports of high markings due to the newly imposed stiffer penalties and tests. but one driver, BRSL's G. McMullen, 1971 Finals runner-up, actually said, when he made best performance at Birmingham with his BMC that he thought this year's course was a little easier than hitherto. His Class G penalty was an incredibly low 58 points.

Only two other competitors have so far

returned scores below the "tonboth at the Bristol centre and both handling artics. In Class G Leyland driver P. A. G. James re

gistered 64 and J. S. Clark (Ford) logged 98 in Class E.

Test 1 continues to cause headaches for the rigid vehicle classes and to date the best performer in this category is Bristol's Class D Albion driver I. Ridgway with 112 paints.

Twenty-four hours after he had been declared the winner in Class D at Wolverhampton R. Davies (ERF) was told that a discrepancy had been detected in his score card. The marking party had omitted to debit him with 196 penalty points, which lifted him from a respectable 312 to an unplaced 508. When he was informed on Monday that the new Class D winner was H. Hampton (Guy), his colleague at Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries, disappointment was eased. The winner's score was 314.

R. T. Hayes (Bedford), an NCL man, easily won at Newcastle under Lyme, his Class E score of 191 being the only one below 200. This consistent driver has won this class four years running.

In a battle largely dominated by oil company drivers at Grimsby, Shell-Mex and BP expert S. Chapman with his rigid AEC returned byfar the lowest score of the day — 124 points as against 157 from Conoco's Class H winner P. C. Bontoff.
