Driving licence complications

I was driving my Ford Cargo 7.5-tonne breakdown truck when police stopped me. The truck was carrying a car on t he platform and towing another on the spectacle lift.

I passed a driving test about 10 years ago and have a Category B licence.

The police said my licence did not cover me while towing the car on the spectacle lift because the total exceeded 8.25 tonnes—and because I did not have a licence, I could not be insured.

I have now received summonses for these offences.

I know a lot of drivers who do the same kind of work as me on a car driver's licence. Were the police right ?
