• Armed men held a Belfast truck driver and his family hostage overnight last weekend before forcing him to drive a load of Cadbury's Easter eggs across the border to Co Cavan the following morning.

The masked gang entered the man's house at 22:30hrs on Thursday and spent the night there. The following morning they forced the driver to collect his unit from the depot and made him drive the truck 60 miles to Kingscourt in the Irish Republic.

His wife and daughter were taken from their home by the gang in the family mr and held hostage while he did so.

The unnamed driver was taken in an unmarked van to a separate location and was released in the early hours of Saturday—his wife and daughter were freed by the thieves some time later. The family's red Ford Orion car, registration GRZ 4488, is still missing.

CI Two masked robbers hijacked an Italian lorry driver near Heathrow while he was sleeping in his cab and took off with designer clothes worth over £100,000.

The terrified driver, who works for Italian firm Acro Transporti, was bound with plastic rope and masking tape and pushed into a van. He was then driven from Feltham, Middlesex and dumped in Sunbury, Surrey. Police later recovered the lveco Ford in Waltham Abbey, Essex, but are still seeking the hijackers.

a regulations meeting • The Road Haulage Association is urging livestock hauliers to attend a meeting on 23 March to discuss important issues concerning their livelihoods. Topics to be discussed at the meeting, chaired by RHA national livestock group chairman Eddie Harper, will include an update on the new EC directive on animal transport; the draft proposal on the Construction & Use regulations for livestock vehicles; and the certification of livestock drivers.

An open forum is also planned. The meeting will be held at Roadway House, Bretton Way, Peterborough, starting at 1 9:30hrs. Operators wishing to confirm attendance should fax the RHA on 01733 332349.
