IMPORTANT moves towards the adop1 tion of European standards for refrigerated transport were made at the 21st session of the E.C.E.'s inland transport committee held in Geneva recently. In response to representations by 1RU, consideration was given to the early enforcement of the 1962 E.C.E. agreement on standards for controlledtemperature vehicle bodies. Several delegations stated that the ratification of the agreement by their governments would be made this year or in the first few months of 1966. In the meantime, the committee agreed to draw the attention of E.C.E. members to the importance of bringing the agreement into force it an early date.

The French delegate warned that if the agreement was not enforced as soon as possible. his government would consider itself obliged to extend to international hauliers operating in France the strict regulations on refrigerated vehicles which are at present applicable only to French carriers.

Behind these developments there clearly lies the influence of Transfrigoroute Europe—an international federation of refrigerated vehicle operators and bodybuilders with national groups in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Holland. Jugoslavia. Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Besides important technical work in connection with the formation of standards, Transfrigoroute promotes inter-working arrangements and has set up for members valuable facilities for obtaining dry ice, spare parts, specialized equipment and fuel. In view of the development of this class of traffic, it is surprising that a British branch has not been established so far—there is obvious scope for the formation of such a body under the auspices of the Road Haulage Association's international group.
