Volvo Trucks' FH enjoys the sort of longevity reserved for success stories such as Daf Trucks' 85 and 95, the Mercedes-Benz Actros and Renault's Magnum. It was born from the F range, and in 1993, it offered the premium option over the more workmanlike FM, which came later,

Those early models had the D12 (and later the D16) engine under the cab, and introduced the overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder. Plus unit injectors replaced the diesel injection pump.

Cab options soon went beyond the day and sleeper with the Globetrotter, and the first XL arrived in 1995. FH captured Truck of the Year in 1994 and again in 2000. The manufacturer claims to have sold more than 400,000 versions of the FH truck.

During 1998 and 1999 the line-up was revamped and the Dl 2C engine replaced the Dl 2A, preparing the way for Euro-3 emission levels in 2001. During 2004 the f irst I-Shift automated 12-speed transmissions were introduced and the driveline was overhauled in 2005 with the addition of the 13-litre engine, this time preparing the way for Euro-4 and Euro-5, and the tag of FH12 was replaced by FR Today the 13-litre line-up includes 400, 440, 480 and 520hp with torque figures of up to 2,500Nm. The overhead camshaft, four-valve technology and unit injectors remain central to its design. It comes with four cab versions; day, sleeper. Globetrotter and Globetrotter XL.
