AAnational Transport has won authority to base vehicles at a Leicestershire site despite the fact that they pass within inches of residents houses when leaving.

The company had applied to operate six vehicles and six trailers from Hermitage Road, Coalville but it was opposed by North West Leicestershire District Council, Leicestershire County Council and six neigh bouring residents on environmental and highway grounds. It was currently operating from the site under interim authority Director Raymond Vaughan said that the firm wanted to run an international operation from the site, which had been used for transport since 1939.

He maintained that vehicle movements in and out of the site would be less than they would be with a domestic operation as vehicles were away for longer periods.

The local resi dents expressed concern about a range of issues including visual intrusion, noise, fumes, vibration, possible damage to their properties and operation at unsocial hours. They complained about the inadequate access, saying that vehicles often had to mount the pavement.

After watching video evidence produced by the residents of vehicles leaving the site, Eastern Deputy Traffic Commissioner Frances Burton said that it was clearly a tight fit.

Burton granted the application with conditions restricting times of vehicle movement and maintenance following an undertaking from the company that it would seek planning permission for a new access to be built.
