IF rural bus operators wefe to provide 'more services, they should be given better inducements than relaxation of standards in vehicle construction. They must be helped to co-ordinate their efforts when applying for road service licences and perhaps be granted some simplified form of licence.

These recommendations are made by the Central Transport Consultative Committee in their annual report (Stationery Office, Is.). There was some difficulty in persuading small operators to provide services in lieu of closed railway branch lines, "They have been frightened off in the past by the large operators, and they are still opposed by the larger operators before the Traffic Commissioners if they try to compete even indirectly with the established service," say the committee.

It is suggested that all parties concerned with country services should be brought together to discuss their ideas and difficulties before a central coordinating authority. Such a body might well be a county, council, and the committee believe that this matter might be broached with the County Councils' Association.

SUSPENSION POSSIBLE FOR WEIGHT INCREASE THE substitution of a 62-ton low1 loading trailer for a 2+-ton flat trailer, granted under a special A licence, has led the North Western Licensing Authority to consider suspension for three months of the special A licence held by J. Walsh (Darwen), Ltd.

At a Blackburn hearing on June 1, the company applied for a public A licence for a 42-ton tractor and a 62-ton trailer, in substitution for the special A.

The Authority has now indicated that the original special A application was in respect of a 2i-ton flat trailer, and by .changing that to a 62-ton low-loader the applicants had failed to fulfil their statement of intention and expectation.

In these circumstances the Licensing Authority says he had in mind not giving a decision for the time being on the application and suspending the special A licence concerned. If the applicants so desired, a public inquiry would be held to enable them to show why the suspension should not be put into effect.
