Bid for 100 Tippers Fails

ANEWLY formed company, M.T.S. (Yorkshire), Ltd., who hold no A or B licences, was accused of disgraceful conduct by Maj. F. S. Eastwood, Yorkshire Licensing Authority, at Leeds last Friday. The company making application for 100 3i-ton tippers on B licence, requested an adjournment. Maj. Eastwood rejected the request and refused the application without calling for evidence from any of the 110 objectors.

Mr. F. Amos, managing director of the new company, said that the vehicles were wanted in connection with construction work on the new Doncaster by-pass. Because contracts had not yet been issued he was unable to produce supporting evidence and asked for an adjournment.

Maj. Eastwood observed that the company had known for eight weeks that the case could not be dealt with on that day, yet they allowed the objectors, many of whom came from the Midlands, to travel to Leeds. Mr. E. Mellor, for 110 objectors in the Yorkshire and East Midlands areas, said that a great volume of evidence had been collected showing that vehicles were available for the work.

Maj. Eastwood said that he was aware that there had been a large switch-over of coal transport from road to rail in the south Yorkshire area. In Keighley alone, one operator, who formerly hired between 50 and 60 vehicles, had lost traffic amounting to 4,000 tons a week.
