Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A LICENCE to operate a car trans

porter was granted at Carlisle last week by Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, the Northern Licensing Authority, despite the fact that a similar grant had been made in the area last year and had not yet been taken up. Mr. Hanlon expressed concern over the matter and the B licence granted to Mr. Albert Pickthall, Cleator Moor, Cumberland, was conditional on taking up the licence within three months,

Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for Mr. Pickthall, said that four car dealers supporting the application bought more than 1,000 vehicles a year between them and that they were not satisfied with the system of sending drivers to the ear factories to collect new vehicles. It was estimated that the transporter would carry approximately 600 cars in a year.

Mr. J. Liddle told the Authority that British Railways, who objected, could carry the traffic and deliver it overnight. The railways were already carrying a considerable number of cars for one main dealer in Carlisle. They were now able to offer "private rates" and willing to enter into agreements with any distributors.

Before granting the licence Mr. Hanlon expressed concern over the grant already made for a car transporter in the area: He was worried about the danger of rate undercutting if the previous grant was taken up. Mr. Campbell Wardlaw pointed out that the witnesses supporting the two applications were entirely different, and that the law gave the Authority power to revoke licences if necessary.

PIRELLI INCREASE TOO

FALLING into line with the price increases, announced last week by the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., Pirelli, Ltd., have raised tyre and tube prices by 2f per cent. from June 1.
