ROAD-GRANT PROPOSALS: SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS.

AEMBERS of the Parliamentary ai Road Group and others have submitted numerous amendments to the Finance Bill. In the main these are designed to ensure that a substantial proportion of the money paid in taxation shall be secured for constructing or improving roads, and that road users shall be consulted more often. Sir Reginald Clarry, Colonel Sandeman Allen, and others have an amendment proposing that the Minister of Transport should consult representative organizations of highway authorities, road users, and transport workers before he determines the sums that may be required for grants for road-improvement schemes.

Another amendment suggests that the Minister should present to Parliament, in each year, an estimate of the moneys to be paid into the Road Fund, and should submit therewith a statement of the details of the proposed expenditure out of the Fund.

Miss Lloyd George and other Liberals will propose that he shall call a survey to be made, and reviewed annually, of the roads classified for the maintenance grants, and of proposals for the construction of new roads and road improvements, and that he shall, in making such survey, call into consultation

AMONG the numerous questions tc be addressed to the Minister of Transport in the House of Commons are: How many level crossings have been abolished in the past 12 months, how much have they cost, what are the numbers of men and women who have been examined for the driving test and how many have failed?

In view of the number of complaints received that, on certain unrestricted Toads on the outskirts of .cities, drivers are travelling too fast, a North London member wants to know if the 7vlinister can state which roads in the viciiii)tr North London are the subject of ,aikal complaints.
