by S. Gratrix, pint, and Brother, Ltd., Manchester, against 10 convictions in connection with drivers' hours, was dismissed by the Recorder, Mr. N. M. Goldie, K.C., M.P., at Manchester, on Monday.

Mr. P. 13utlin, for the appellant, argued that, although the men clockedin at 8 a.m., and this time was the first entry on their sheets, it frequently happened that they did not carry out any work in connection with their vehicles for several hours. He contended that such time should not be reckoned as driving time and said that, in such circumstances, although a man was not resting within the meaning of Section 31 of the 1933 Act, he was not driving as defined in the 1930 Act The Rec,order, said that it would be impossible to secure a conviction if it were not possible to rely on information given on the log-sheets. Whilst he accepted the drivers' evidence that they stopped for tea, he did not think that these stoppages occupied half an hour or were regarded by the men as the statutory rest period.

Ashford By-pass to Cost E200,000.

The Minister of Transport has made a grant from the Road Fund towards the cost, estimated at close on £200,000, for the construction of a new road to by-pass Ashford, on the

London-Folkestone road. The existing road through the town is difficult, and it is too narrow to cope with present-day traffic which in 1935 averaged 6,000-7,000 tons daily.

The proposed new road will be constructed on the north side of the town and will be over 2f miles long. Its overall width will be 100 ft, and it willbe provided with dual carriageways 20 ft. wide, a 24-ft. central reserve and two 6-ft. cycle tracks.

A Carbon-monoxide Eliminator.

A device which renders exhaust gases non-poisonous has been developed by a young Plymouth inventor. It is compact, and easily incorporated in the exhaust system of any vehicle, whilst it is anticipated that it can be produced to sell at about 10s.

Cylindrical in shape and designed to be connected up in the exhaust pipe, the apparatus comprises three units. The first is a. filter element which extracts solid carbon particles and requires occasional renewal. After passing through this, the gas enters a venturi tube in which it mixes with air drawn in from the atmosphere.

Finally, this mixture passes through a series of treated grids, the action of which is to cause any carbon monoxide present to combine with oxygen from the air, forming carbon-dioxide, which of course, is not actively poisonous.
