Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Unit Which Enables the Scope of the Lightweight Farm Tractor to be Extended.

I N 'SPITE of the fact that the average .I. agricultural tractor.is used for certain operations on the farm apart from actual tillage of the land, there are some periods of the year when suitable employment cannot be found for it. Some agriculturists use their tractors for road haulage during these spells of comparative inactivity on the farm, and work of this description can be satisfactorily and economically performed providing that the load be kept well within the capacity of the tractor.

With certain types of tractai, however, it is sometimes difficult to secure sufficient adhesion when they are used on the road, and for overcoming this disability in connection with the lightweight machine the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Eagle Works' Warwick, have

• designed and patented a two-wheeled trailer capable of being used with tipping gear which possesses several novel features.

The trailer body is built out of balance at its forward end, and the unbalanced part of the load thus rests on the drawbar of the tractor, and thereby increases the weight an the driving wheels. The company inform us that the weight can be so proportioned as to increase the haulage capacity of the machine by close on 100 per cent., whilst, at the same time, the dead weight of the trailer is reduced by approximately 30 per cent, as a result of the use Of only one axle and the elimination of the turntable. In this manner the actual useful load hauled by the trailer can be much increased.

This new Eagle trailer has been specially designed for use behind petrolpropelled tractors, and particularly the Fordson machine, It is built in two sizes, one in which a useful load of 3i tons can be carried in districts where the gradients do not exceed 1 in 10, or the other in which 5-4on loads can be hauled by the Fordson in areas where the gradients do not exceed 1 in 15. The chassis is of all-steel construction, the side channels and cross-members being well riveted together. The axle is of Siemans-Martin steel, and it carries cast-steel wheels, which are fitted with solid rubber tyres. The wheels are fitted with internal-expanding band brakes, which are controlled from the driver's seat by a lever at the front end of the trailer.

The body of the trailer is of capacious dimensions, being 11 fe. long, 6 ft. wide, and 1 ft. 6 ins. deep. It is built of oak framing throughout, and the front, sides, bottom boards and the hinged tailboard can be constructed of elm or deal. Leaf springs of robust design are used for the suspension of the trailer.

The tipping gear is of the ordinary single vertical screw type, and it is hand operated. It supports the weight at the forward end of the trailer, and the screw permits of ready uncoupling from the tractor. When the body is tipped to its maximum extent, the rear end falls very close to the ground, thus making for expeditions and complete discharge of the contents of the body. One of the great advantages of a two. wheeled trailer of this description is that it can be manceuvred with considerably greater facility than can the standard type of four-wheeled unit, especially in connection with reversing operations; moreover, the elimination of a turntable enables a much lower loading line to be obtained.

The trailer can also be used in connection with horses, in which case suitable shafts are connected to the rear of the body, the front end of which is supported by a special .attachment carrying a castor wheel.

By the use of two or more Eagle trailers of this type it is possible to find almost constant employment for farm tractors or horses, or one system of haulage can be used conjointly with the other, While one loaded trailer is being hauled to its destination, the other can be loaded in readiness for the return of the hauling unit. Such a system should work well in connection with general estate work, building operations and the like, and result in such tasks being economically and efficiently performed. The company are anticipating a large demand for this trailer (many orders have already been received), which acids yet another type to the various models of Ackerman steering turntable steering and other forms of tipping trailers produced by them.
