• Don't discuss details of your load with any unauthorised person.
▪ Never leave the keys in the cab, even if you are at the rear of the vehicle.
• Don't give a lift to anyone, however plausible their story and no matter how innocent they look.
• Wherever possible, avoid using the same route and making the same drops and rest stops every day.
• Have all major components security etched with the vehicle identification number (VIN).
• When possible, park up for the night in well-lit, secure truck parks.
• One simple but effective measure that many drivers adopt to frustrate would-be thieves during overnight stops is to park with the rear doors of their vehicle or its trailer hard up against another vehicle.
• Avoid parking in obviously vulnerable areas when possible.
• Ensure that all vehicle doors are locked and the windows are secure if you sleep in the cab overnight.
• Always ask to see the identity of any officer who stops you.
• Have an alarm or immobiliser system fitted to the vehicle by a reputable specialist and approved by the insurance company.
• Don't leave any trailer unattended unless it is parked up on approved secure premises.
• Fit a kingpin or drawbar lock to any trailer that is left unattended.
• Seek the advice of your local crime prevention officer, especially if you carry high-value merchandise.
