every year, yet are rarely punished according to road safety campaign group Brake. The toughest charge they face is one of dangerous driving, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail. In comparison, the sentence for causing death by dangerous driving can be 10 years. Brake says that in practice many drivers escape prosecution or walk away from court with little more than a slap on the wrist.

In a parliamentary meeting this week Brake will be putting pressure on the government to introduce a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and to make penalties for all dangerous driving significantly tougher.

Mary Williams, Brake's executive director, says: "Toughening up on dangerous driving is an essential element in preventing the 3,400 deaths and 38,200 serious injuries that occur on our roads every year."
