Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I was not surprised to read last week's news story on the state of the country's motorway service stations—truckers have known for years that they are often dirty, always overpriced and offer food that, more often than not, either tastes as though it's been cooked in sump oil or has had all the flavour surgically removed. Unfortunately what develops is a vicious circle; when you treat drivers like dirt then they cease caring about the facilities, which only serves to worsen the situation. I appreciate that motorway services have to cater for all tastes, from families to sales reps in Ford Mondeos and truck drivers too, but at the moment all they can come up with is a poor compromise to all concerned. Every time a service area has a refurbishment it seems that they add another useless retail outlet—I'm all for increased choice but I have yet to find an occasion where I've urgently needed a clean pair of socks or a silk tie at short notice.

Can we not have cheap, plentiful food and clean showers instead? It really is time the people who design these things took notice of what their customers actually want. Derek Tinsley,

Barnsley.
