Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Northampton-based haulier C Butt has been named as Haulier of the year in a competition organised by Motor Transport newspaper.

The MAN-sponsored award, one of eight made by Motor Transport at a ceremony in London last week, went to Butt against competition from TNT Roadfreight and Trans-, port Development Groupowned Harris Road Services.

According to the citation, Butt's entry came with a "glowing" testimonial and evidence of an impressive return on capital.

TNT won the Daf-sponsored marketing campaign award, BP Oil was judged Own Account Operator of the Year (sponsored by MercedesBenz), Fred Spreadborough of Watney, Mann and Truman is Fleet Engineer of the Year (sponsored by Scania), and the Motor Transport-sponsored Dealer of the Year is Duffields of Norwich, a Volvo distributor.

The Crane Fruehauf-sponsored Environment Award went to Peter Lane Transport of Bristol on account of its drivers' behaviour on the roads and its smartly finished depot. Runners-up in that sector were Bucks and Sainsbury, the latter because of the Greater London Council-specified hush kits fitted to 96 of its Daf and Volvo trucks and the quieter fridge units used.

Leyland-sponsored Innovation of the Year is Sparshatts of Hampshire's Sidewalker body which has fold-down sides which act as fast access loading ramps.

National Carriers Contract Services-sponsored Fleet Vehicle of the Year, selected by a panel of journalists, was the 16.2-tonne Leyland Freighter 16.5, one of two Leylands — the other the 30.5-tonne Constructor 8 — shordisted for the award.

Others shortlisted were the Ford Transit 2.5di diesel with direct injection engine, the Mercedes-Benz 814 7.5-tonner, the Dodge Commando C24 tipper, and the 38-tonne Scania P92 tractive unit.

The Motor Transport Special Award for services to the industry went to Transport Development Group chairman Sir James Duncan, a past president of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers,
