• The chances of the extra Dartford crossing being a tunnel have been increased by the short-listing of three tunnel and only one bridge project by the Department of Transport.
The race to build a missing link in the M25 London orbital route will be between the Trafalgar House Dartford River Crossing Company (tunnel or bridge); Balfour Beatty/Taylor Woodrow's Thames Tunnel Company; and John Mowlem's Dartford Tunnel Group.
A final decision will be taken by July 25 when Parliament rises for the summer recess.
