Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A recent survey on spares carried out by Seddon Atkinson has revealed an alarming use of spuriously manufactured parts fitted to vehicles, particularly in safety critical areas such as steering swivel and suspension shackle pins.

As a result, the company has issued service information note G9/16 that includes extracts from laboratory reports on shackle pins which were obtained for analysis.

These showed low surface case hardness and oil grooves of varying depths having been cut after case hardening, defects that would have produced inferior wear and fatigue resistance, inefficient lubrication and early failure.

Seddon Atkinson acknowledges that operators buy at the most economic prices but advises that recommended items have their part numbers stamped on them and that Fleetrite parts are made to the same standard as original components.
