We presume you are referring to the in formation given in report No. 72 of the IB concerning the proposed increase by ritish Railways Board in certain countryide fares and charges.

Appendix D to this report gave comparisons etween different forms of transport based

n 12 inter-city routes of an average disance of 200 miles. The average journey time .as giver as follows: Rail 3 hours 35min., oach 8 hours, car 5 hours and air (terminal o terminal) 2 hours 30min. The average umber of services per day was rail 15, coach and air 7 while the standard single fare as rail 81s 3d first )54s 2d second), coach Os, and air 95s. Obviously the number of ervices per day does not apply to the car but e total costs are given as 156s 3d with the nning cost 66s 8d.

The car costs are for one driver and no passengers. If the driver is accompanied by one passenger the cost would be halved. It is also stated in the appendix that these car costs are based on 10,000 miles a year— running costs include petrol, oil, tyres. servicing and repairs.
