• A scheme introduced by Strowgers Ltd., of Moss Side, Manchester, to instruct drivers who wish to enter for its p.s.v. licence test, is proving so popular that it now has a list of 40 applicants waiting to start the course.

But as summer is such a busy time for Strowgers, which operates coaches on private hire, only four or five trainees can be managed simultaneously during the high season. However, during the winter when the double-decker used for instruction is only engaged part-time on works contracts the firm can handle a dozen at a time.

In the 18 months it had been running the courses only three drivers had had to be retested, said Mr A. Whyatt, the manager. There is no "average" passing time. Some get through in two or three lessons; others take eight or nine but the firm makes sure that drivers do not enter for the test until they are absolutely ready.
