A LTHOUGH the " catch " for Fleet1-1. Wood's first excursion into drivercontest organization may not have been especially large, this situation gave the Fylde area competitors the chance of securing a useful proportion of the awards, a fact that should be a distinct encouragement to them for future occasions. For this initial effort the promoters decided not to seek an overall winner, the honours thus being well shared between the 54 actual starters.

The Fleetwood committee had obviously made a close study of the job and et(erything moved smoothly. Actually there would have been little difficulty in speeding up the afternoon's tests, but at one period they were clearly being slowmarched to keep in step with the timetable. Lists of competitors were posted at the commencement of the tests and were kept up to the minute as results

constantly came from the control room. With the co-operation of the police a section of road in the docks area was made available for the tests, and ample parking was provided in the immediate vicinity. The road circuit started from the R.A.F. Station at Weeton, near Blackpool. The distinction of being unpenalized on either Highway Code or road route was gained by competitor No. I, N. Clayton (R. Cottam and Sons Ltd.), B.M.C..

Clean sheets on the Code were also preserved by J. G. Eccles, an ownerdriver of a Bedford who is an agricultural and general haulier of nine years' experience. He was winner of Class D, and overall lost the, fewest marks of the day. Others clear on the Code were Cpl. Murphy (R.A.F.), Bedford, best in the Services' class; T. Pritchard (Thomas and Evan Ltd.), Commer, and D. Bamford (John and C. Lowes), Bedford. Unsullied showings on the road circuit were the lot of R. F. Taylor (National Benzole Co. Ltd.), Leyland Comet; R. Leack (Petrofina (G.B.) Ltd.), Atkinson; J. Thomas (Daintee Chocolate Confectionery Co. Ltd.), Bedford, and Cpl. Mantripp (R.A.E.), Bedford.

Penalty-free Parking

Little fault could be found with the weather, although officials were kept busy during the afternoon re-setting the pylons, which were being blown over by a stiff breeze. A notable success—no penalty marks whatever—was secured on the kerb test by J. C. Eales (Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd.), A.E.C. He had lost only 13 on the Code and road combined, but a 105-mark debit on width judging set him right back. On the first test he was immediately followed by A. G. Chandler (Petrofina (G.B.) Ltd.), Atkinson, who dropped only three, a score that was equalled by S. Holt (Barnes and Tipping Ltd.), Albion. On the day's markings, Holt, with 140, was second only to Eccles. his Code and road dcbit being 12, so that up to and including tbe first test he was only 15 down; on the width and garaging tests, however, he did not live up to his previous form.

Barnes and Tipping Ltd. were successful in the team section, for which there were a dozen entries. Holt was supported by D. Knowles and H. Pyc. The former finished with the third-lowest penalties of the day, although he dropped no fewer than 44 on the Highway Code and road circuit. His exceptional performance on the garage test, resulting in a figure of 15, gave him a decided advantage. AT.
