ruck crime is a major problem for commercial

vehicle operators nationwide. While it's difficult to get an accurate Figure in terms of overall financial losses, according to recently published material from the Home Office it could be costing the industry as much as £1 billion a year. Home Office figures also estimate the number of crimes against commercial vehicles during 1993 was approximately 40,000. Last year is unlikely to show any improvement. Given the amount of publicity on truck theft, and the information available on how to prevent it, there's no excuse for staying ignorant. The Freight Transport Association has produced a 100-page Theft Prevention Guide which is issued free to all FTA members-nonmembers can buy a copy for El 5. (Additional copies to members cost El 0).

The guide includes details of the FTA's own survey on truck crime, and sections on: employee, depot and transit security; advice to drivers; security equipment; secure lorry parks; handling insurance; and how to report theft. Copies of the Guide can be obtained from the FTA Sales Office at Hermes House, St John's Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 911Z; phone (0892) 526171.

Commercial Motor also has a limited number of its

Truck Theft Action Pack, produced in association with the RHA and Iveco Ford. The pack contains details on vehicle systems and depot security with a vehicle detail recording card and list of local crime prevention officers. The pack costs 29.95 (plus £2.35 post and packing) and can be obtained from CM's ancillary sales dept on (0371) 810433.
