SIR ARTHUR ARMITAGE has begun to take verbal evidence for his lorry inquiry, and around 15 organisations will be examined on their submissions.
The oral sessions began on an environmental note last week when Transport 2000, the Council for the Protection of Rural England, Friends of the Earth, and the Conservation Society were called.
The Freight Transport Association is due to appear next week, and the Road Haulage Association and the National Freight Corporation anticipate early examinations.
While an inquiry spokesman could not confirm how many oral sessions there will be, he did assure CM this week that there was no question of ranging bodies with opposing views against one another.
It seems probable that there will be around 15 oral examinations, and other bodies expected to appear include British Rail and the Department of Transport.
