Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I HAVE READ with interest the recent series of articles by D. N. Dean on "The Challenge to Public Transport" and would like to add some points on the siting of bus stops.

I have in mind a particular bus stop in the London suburbs which is situated directly outside a supermarket. It is an interesting spectacle to watch people alighting from buses and going direct into the warmth of the supermarket, which does a roaring trade. Having completed their purchases, many shoppers then cross the road to the bus stop opposite for the return journey.

Would it not be a good idea to encourage supermarkets such as this to sell bus tickets for the return journey? Such a move would facilitate the introduction of one-man operation of buses by easing the work of the driver/conductors and perhaps encourage more shoppers to use the supermarkets. After all the majority of such shoppers are housewives who may not have access to the family car, or may come from families who do not possess a car at all.
