A DURHAM scrap dealer who used a lorry with three tyres without tread was warned by the Northern LA, Mr. John Hanlon, al an inquiry on January 4.

Mr. Ernest Brown, owner of Durham City Metals, was called to the hearing tc "show causewhy his licence should not Ix revoked after being convicted for havinE faulty tyres and lights, the unladen weigh not indicated, and allowing a person undei 21 to drive a vehicle over three tons.

Mr. Hanlon told him: "As this was not a first offence you were liable for a fine of £5( or three months' jail. You could also havt been banned from driving yourself." Thc court had imposed a fine of £5.

Mr. Hanlon said it was his duty tc impose a penalty in any case that involvec danger to the public, and he suspended ont of the firm's four lorries for three months.

Earlier Mr. C. M. Moreland, appearinf for the firm, said the vehicle was never usec at night, and there were plenty of span tyres available for it but the driver had noi put them on.

The driver was very experienced, al though he was under 21, and had beer driving on private ground since he was 15 The vehicle had been newly painted, and tht painters had obscured the unladen weigh painted on the side. In any case, the vehick was only on a half-mile journey and hac now been scrapped, he said.
