DELEGATES to the conference to be held in Inverness this month to discuss the implications of the Transport Bill for the Highlands will be told that as it stands it would cripple fishing ports such as Lochinver and Kinlochbervie.
Fish valued at more than ilm a year is landed at these centres, but the vital factor for this growing industry is fast and cheap road transport to the South. The new transport proposals would push costs so high that skippers would prefer to land farther south.
The conference will be attended by representatives of the seven crofting counties. Fishermen's agents responsible for these deliveries do not believe they can operate under the Transport Minister's scheme except at greatly increased cost.
