Mr. John Melrose, haulage contractor of Butterley Grange, Ripley, Derbyshire, was awarded the M.B.E. in the New Year Honours List for his work as president of Alfreton Nelson Club, a social club for the physically handicapped. He has also been District Commissioner of Ripley and District Boy Scouts for many years and has taken an almost life-long interest in Scouting. A magistrate since 1951 and a prison visitor, Mr. Melrose is also president of Swanwick Old People's Welfare Association.

Miss Alice Walker, of Blaby, Leics, the first woman to hold an executive position in the transport industry after it was nationalized, was awarded the O.B.E. in the New Year Honours List. Miss Walker founded her transport business after the first world war, in which she trained men to drive heavy army lorries. By 1959 she was chairman and director of seven companies.

Mr. A. R. Patton, manager of the Retail Marketing Department of ShellMex and B.P., Ltd., has been appointed manager of the company's training centre at Codicote, Hertfordshire. He has been succeeded by Mr. W. Charlton, who has been national sales manager.

London Transport announce a number of changes in the, organization of the department of the chief mechanical engineer (road services). Mr. R. D. Gillanders, divisional engineer (general), is now assistant rolling stock engineer (road services)—the new post being substituted for that which he previously held—and will act as deputy to the rolling stock engineer (road services), Mr. H. W. Cromack, divisional engineer (central road services), " C" Division, will become divisional engineer (country buses and coaches) with effect from January 22, 1962. He succeeds Mr. W. I. Kirshner, who is retiring after 36 years' service with London Transport and As predecessors. Mr. J. S. Stevens, principal executive assistant to the rolling stock engineer (road services), will become divisional engineer (central road services), " C " Division, and will be made an officer of the executive with effect from January 22.

Mr. E. E. Quinton, works director at the 260-acre Dunlop tyre plant at Fort Dunlop, Erdington, Birmingham, has retired after 37 years with the company. He is 61.

Mr. R. A. Mulvey has relinquished his position as managing director of CyprienFox (Transport), Ltd., but will continue as chairman. Mr. L. E. East, an executive director for some years, has been appointed managing director. Mr. East is to be this year's chairman of the Trans port Managers' Club. • Halifax Motor Co., Ltd., Ford Main Dealers, have appointed Mr. R. D. Manney, formerly with the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., as their general sales manager, and Mr. Peter Bentley, from North Riding Garages, Ltd., Pickering, Yorkshire, as their commercial vehicle sales manager. Both are directly responsible to the sales' director, Major D. L. Smith.
