MR. A, HALES, director of W. A. Bates, Ltd., Leicester, has retired. When he became a director in 1918, a position which he held when Dunlop took over the Bates organization in August, 1925, he had been, in turn, chief clerk, assistant sales manager, sales manager, and secretary' of the company. Until 1935 he was a Dunlop regional sales manager, first in the Midland region, then in the East

Midlands and in the West. He travelled widely on business missions, visiting Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India, Malaya and Japan. When the Bates organization was revived in 1935, Mr. Hales again became a director. He has been connected with the trade for just on half a century.
