Southampton drivers told to avoid new Ikea superstore

SOUTHAMPTON CITY Council is advising haulage companies travelling through the city to avoid West Quay Road for the next few weeks due to the opening of a new Ikea store.

The advice comes following a leaked memo, apparently from the county council, forecasting "severe delays" for hauliers as a result of the expected increased traffic.

A transport assessment estimated that at peak times, there will be an extra 200 cars per hour on the roads after Ikea's opening (12 February).

However, a city council spokesman says the memo blows potential concerns out of proportion".

"How journeys will be affected is difficult to say," he adds. We are advising haulage companies and commercial vehicle companies to avoid the area in the first few weeks of its opening and plan a bit more tame if the road network [s busier, which it will be. We are not anticipating major problems."

A spokesman for Southampton Containers says hauliers travelling to the Isle of Wight or working out of the Eastern Docks are more likely to be affected.
