• Two drivers look set to leave Reclruth tipper operator Robert Barnard after the Government last week denied financial support to the South Crafty tin mine in Cornwall.
Failing an eleventh-lour rescue bid, the mine, described by Small Business Minister Barbara Roche as "unviable", will now have to close.
"The news is the worst, I think," says Barnard. "My business as a whole won't suffer too much, but I've two local family men working the South Crofty contract who won't want to switch to long-haul work."
Barnard operates eight vehicles and has been busy securing long-haul contracts as insurance against the mine's closure— but local work is scarce.
