THE DEPARTMENT of Transpo is carrying apparent cost-cuttin to absurd lengths in proposing to absolve local authorities frog the statutory duty to advertise traffic orders and proposals in the London Gazette.
In years gone by, road users' associations had difficulty enough in discovering plans to restrict traffic and often had to rely on members for cuttings from local newspapers. This is no way to keep track of some 2,000 new traffic orders each year, of which road users' representatives are entitled to full advance notice.
The London Gazette, as a statutory journal of record, is thi proper medium for the announcement of public orders and proposals that may result ir litigation. The alternative is for the Department itself to keep th( records and make them available to the public. Is it tryini to upstage the apocryphal Sir Humphrey Appleby's Ministry o Administration?
