built r the next three years, Transport Secretary David Howell has clicted.

peaking after the publication he Government's public exiditure White Paper, Mr rvell said this would enable 100 more towns and vilas to have through traffic an out of them. The f731m available for major road building and structural maintenance in 1983/84 is the same as the Government had predicted in last year's White Paper. If tender prices remained keen, it is hoped to let all new construction schemes as soon as their preparation is completed, said the White Paper.

Capital expenditure by local authorities on local transport is expected to rise sharply by about one third, because of the massive underspending by local authorities this year. The White Paper says that output could be increased by 25 per cent if they spent what the Government had allowed for.

Last week, Mr Howell announced that an extra £45m was being spent on road building this year because of contracts being finished earlier than scheduled.

Eleven schemes, totalling 28.7 miles, had been finished this year, earlier than anticipated — one of them 10 months ahead of schedule.

Another 10 schemes, due to be completed next year, are also running ahead of schedule. The extra cash has been required to meet bills that have been coming in earlier than anticipated.
