Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The insurance dangers of lorry drivers picking up passengers was emphasized during a Commons debate on passenger insurance last week.

Drivers picked up passengers out of kindness and also because they felt that, if they had a passenger with them, they were less likely to go to sleep, said Dr Alan Glyn (Tory, Windsor).

Very few of these passengers realized that, in all probability, the vehicle was insured for the driver only and not for a passenger, irrespective of the fact that it happened to be fitted with a second seat.

He mentioned people being taken to work on lorries with forms which were not fixed—people travelling in such vehicles exposed themselves to a grave degree of liability, said Dr Glyn.
