ANEW range of commercial vehicle driving seats has been developed by Cox of Watford Ltd. Called the Drive' master. theaseat is available in six forms, and it can be accommodated in most commercial and p.s.v. cabs. It can be supplied for mounting directly to the cab floor or on a tubularsteel pedestal up to 8 in. in height, in both cases either permanently fixed or with fore-and-aft adjustment. Or two types of adjustable mechanism are offered, one where the seat can be tipped forward to gain access to the body and one which gives a greater range of adjustment (said to exceed 500 positions).

The fore-and-aft slider, which can be incorporated in the seat frames, gives 5 in. of movement in 1-in, increments. Raising and lowering the seat with the adjustable types is achieved by a simple method using slotted and notched plates—two at the front with the tipping-forward model and two at the rear also for the fully adjustable type, These plates are mounted on a spindle across the sub-frame and spring loaded towards the rear. They are controlled by a short lever which can be mounted on whichever side of the seat is most convenient. The notches engage on waisted studs in the wat frame which, on the fully adjustable design,' is in two halves and is hinged at the centre of the sub-frame and at the front and rear crossbars of the seat pedestal. This allows .full movement both up and down, and in a rocking manner.

Both the notched plates can be operated separately, and it will be seen that the seat will tip forward by lowering the front half of the asserribl.■, and back by lowering the rear assembly. By loweringboth ends of the seat the same arnoent the position is altered on a horizontal plane. Alternatively; ii is possible to choose any position in the range by movingone up and the other down.

With the seat spring loaded away from the floor, it is only necessary to release the driver's weight from it and disengage the required notched plate, when that portion of the seat moves to its highest location, To lower, the weight is removed, the plate disengaged and the seat pressed down to the required position. Roller runners are used in the fore-and-aft mechanisms, and this—together with the raising and lowering of the seat—is very easy, both being controlled by levers needing only a finger touch.

Construction of these units is robust, and it is possible to upholster the cushion and the squab in only a few minutes, using the glove method. This, along with other production techniques, makes it possible to produce the seat for flO 10s.

When tested recently the seats were found to be good from the point of view of adjustment, but needing a firmer cushion to prevent bouncing and rolling on corners. The weight of a complete unit is 301b. and it is possible that the design will become.standard equipment on both Ford and Bedford vehicles. Makers: Cox of Watford Ltd., Watford By-pass, Watford, Herts.

Price: 10 10s. (retail) for complete seat with full adjustment mechanism.

These hoses, called Skyhooks, are supplied complete with all types of end fittings for attachment to existing air-line connections. The internal diameter of the hoses is 1-in.; they have very high impact strength, good flexibility and a wide range of extension and retraction. They are claimed to be particularly-suitable for air-braking systems as no swelling takes place under pressure—" full-flow " properties remaining permanently unchanged. They can also be used for fluids, since nylon is impervious to all normal oils, greases, petroleum products, solvents and weak acids.
