THE Minister of Transport is com missioning a study into the design of motorway service areas. The terms of reference of the study are: "To examine the factors which determine the siting, size, layout and design of service areas on motorways and the timing of their introduction; to review especially the requirement's which influence the design of a service area as a whole and its component areas in particular; and to recommend ways of accommodating these requirements in service area designs ".

The study, which is expected to start shortly and to take about 15 months, will be carried out at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College, London.
