IN an appeal for greater efficiency 1 which he made to the road passenger staff, last week, Mr. John Cliff, deputy chairman of London Transport, hinted at a further increase in fares to offset the recent wage rise, which will cost £1,200,000 a year.

Pointing out that another increase would probably result in loss of traffic unless it could be countered by a more attractive service, Mr. Cliff said the Executive were convinced that the staff could make the largest single contribution to providing a better service than existed today.

He said that the standard of fares collection was not as good as it should be.
